Dear Parents,

At St Angela’s engaging and hearing the voice and ideas of our parents is important to us. An effective and professional way of doing this is through a School Advisory Committee who meet regularly to discuss the happenings of our school. In 2023 we require two additional parents to join our committee.

The purpose and responsibilities of committee members is outlined below. If you or someone you know is interested in joining this committee please fill in the nomination forms available at the school office and return by Wednesday 1st March. In the result that we have multiple nominations a parent vote will decide the makeup of the committee.

School Advisory Committee Purposes

The purposes of the School Advisory Committee are to:

• act as an advisory body to the principal on matters concerning education in the school
• act as a forum for discussion on matters concerning education in the school
• provide a link between the parish priest, principal, teachers and parishioners in relation to the provision of Catholic education in the parish community
• promote community development by fostering a strong inter-relationship between the parish, the primary school and Catholic secondary colleges.

School Advisory Committee Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the School Advisory Committee are to:

• promote the Catholic ethos of the school
• provide feedback on and review of school policies
• plan for the future of the school and its ability to accommodate future enrolments
• provide advice on budget planning and finance-related matters
• provide advice on the appropriate provision of faith development and Religious Education programs
• promote child safety in the school

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all parents who booked interviews. These interviews are vitally important as they provide you with the opportunity to get to know your child’s teacher and set learning goals for theyear. Positive partnerships and relationships between home and school are critical in allowing your child to reach their full potential.

Parents and Friends News

Thank you to the parents who attended our first Parents and Friends meeting for 2023. At this meeting it was decided that we would focus on three main fundraisers for the year as outlined below;

Term 1 | Hot Cross Bun Drive, order forms will be sent home next week
Term 2 | Pie Drive
Term 3 | To be confirmed, either a colour run or movie fundraiser

All money raised through our parents and friends initiatives this year will go towards resources for our specialist STEM classes.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 21 st March, 9am in the staffroom.

We are seeking parent helpers to cook pancakes for Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) next Tuesday 21st February from 9:30am.

If you are available to assist could you please complete the poll below. A reminder that all volunteers must have a valid Working with Children’s Check.

Car Line | End of Day

A reminder to all families that if you are using the car line at the end of the school day that you must stay in your car. This allows us to ensure a safe, smooth and more efficient process. If grandparents or other adults are picking up your children we would appreciate you informing them of this procedure.

Next Tuesday, students and staff will begin preparing for our Lenten journey by celebrating Shrove Tuesday. This follows the tradition where people used up all of the fats in the house they would go without until Easter. The name Shrove Tuesday comes from the custom of ringing the ‘shriving bell’ to summon the people to church to be ‘shriven,’ that is to confess their sins at the beginning of Lent.

Students will begin with prayer and learning activities about Shrove Tuesday and what it means for us today, followed by the distribution of pancakes to students. 

Please make sure you go onto your PAM account to give consent for your child to have Pancakes.

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a special day in our Catholic calendar, where ashes are distributed and worn on foreheads as a sign of repentance.

Students in Grades 3-6 will celebrate a special Mass at 12:30 pm with Fr Herman. The Grade 1/2s will celebrate a Liturgy with their classroom teachers.

Your username will be your email address.

Your PAM interface will not look any different, but you may receive an account per parent if you were previously sharing an account with your spouse.

Really Holy

We all know what “Holy” looks like don’t we? That saintly person with callused knees who is not quite of this world and always praying very publically, doing recognised holy things that set her apart from others less holy than her. That’s Holy isn’t it?

Not according to Jesus in Matthew’s gospel this week (Matt 5:38-48)! That is piety, not necessarily holiness. Holiness is determined, apparently, not by our piety, but our love for one another. As ever, Jesus urges us to be counter-instinctive.  To move beyond the feel-good love of those who love us, to the awkward love of those who don’t. Doesn’t that go against the grain! It is all very well to love someone who kisses you on the cheek. But what about someone who hits you on the cheek or steals from you, or is different to us or even hates us? Jesus tells us clearly we must love them especially.

And we pray too, not simply for our loved ones and those in tune with us, but for those who are different and those who seem to hate and persecute us. We love as Jesus loves when we roll up our sleeves doing practical, difficult things for and with those in need. When we do un-glamourous but necessary work for and with those in poverty, those of other faiths and of no faith, those fleeing war and genocide.  South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission revealed an astounding story of a grieving mother forgiving and eventually adopting her son’s killer. That mother exemplified the perfectly loving “holy” people Jesus calls us to be in this gospel.

When we find common ground with, sometimes those who even hate us, we are progressing on the path of love for God and all His creation, seeking to be “perfect as (our) heavenly Father is perfect”. Then we do truly become ‘holy people’.
