Mental Health in Primary Schools

At St Angela of the Cross, we incorporate brain boosts throughout the school day to help students stay focused, refreshed, and ready to learn. Brain boosts are short, purposeful pauses, where students move, stretch, breathe, or engage in a fun, low-pressure activity.

What is the Science Telling Us?
Brain Boosts have a positive effect on learning by:

  • increasing engagement and cognitive functioning
  • supporting the brain maturation process
  • enhancing focus, mood and learning
  • increasing students’ perceived competence
  • improving classroom behaviour
  • and strengthening teacher-student relationships.

Furthermore, if the brain boosts are physical, they have the additional benefits of:

  • increasing circulation
  • and increasing the oxygen in the bloodstream which leads to improved concentration.

Common brain boosts include simple stretching, dance videos, breathing exercises, or quick games - anything that gives the brain a chance to rest and reset. We encourage you to try brain boosts at home too. Even a short break can make a big difference!
